The massive corporate social platform has recently announced that it is suppressing low-effort ‘slop’ posts that appear in post feeds and comments.
Highlighted by a report by Vishwam Sankaran at Yahoo Finance, the company’s vice president of product, Laura Lorenzetti, confirmed that their own AI systems have been trained to correctly identify 94% of AI-generated content in their early tests.
The platform wants to move back to championing content from real people, showcasing the real knowledge and expertise that it has been known for. The current state of ‘AI-Slop’ content may look well put-together on the surface, but doesn’t actually provide anything of any real substance.
What does this mean for me?
If you primarily use AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini to generate your content (both text and images), then once flagged, LinkedIn will not remove your posts, but instead suppress their reach to anyone outside your immediate network. With tests coming back positive and users reporting much fewer ‘slop’ posts in their feeds, it looks like the imminent changes planned by the social giant will completely change the way AI is used on their platform.
What should I be doing going forward?
Seeing as both YouTube, TikTok & Meta have also announced stricter rules for content creators regarding AI-use, the best course of action at the moment is bringing back the human touch in your content. This will increase the time taken to your workflows that you may have gotten used to by using AI as a time-saving tool.
However, using AI tools in your content generation will not disappear, and they are fantastic to expand on original ideas, research, or give a different perspective. The shift will be on using the content AI tools give you and perform more of an editor role to your content – ensuring it’s your words that flesh out the frame that AI gives you or using graphic design tools to lay out your AI-edited imagery instead of letting it generate the entire image.
